There's no golden rule for this, but it is key that all of your conditions and their effects are discussed with your GP, so as an example; if you have walking problems, but have never discussed this with your GP, then they are more likely to say "my patient tells me...".

With regard to your GP, I think it best if it came from you, however, a friend or family member can write a letter of support for you, providing they establish why they know the information they include (e.g. they care for you or take you shopping, etc.).

Have a look at the ESA Claim guides. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa

Your IB will continued to be paid until you are transferred, so I wouldn't rush to contact the DWP.

Hi gordon,

Thanks again for your reply.

My gp is already aware of all my conditions but probably needs updating on my mobility/care needs.

I am unable to see my consultant as this time so I am going to have to send her a letter and ask for letter of support. I know its a problem if the doctor states any of what I say, in the support letter. Am I okay to tell her not to do so and to make sure its in her own words, as I don't know how to ensure this otherwise.

Thanks.

That seems sensible.

Gordon,

So you think that this would not count against me if it goes to appeal etc, and they read my medical files then?

There's no clear cut answer, but providing you have seen your GP on a regular basis and have discussed all of your conditions with them, it should be seen as reasonable.

Hi gordon,

I should be okay with my gp, its just my consultant thats the problem, as appointments are only every 6-12 mths, and I was too ill to attend my last one. I will have to risk it and send them a detailed letter stating the continuing severity of my ill health and my limitations, and ask them not to use my words when doing a support letter.

Thanks for all your advice.
