Attended first WFI

Attended first WFI was created by Dick Emery
I attended my first WFI today. I was petrified and tearful. The lady was actually OK and calmed me down. However she gave me two options. Appeal or attend one mandatory work programme interview. She said there was no obligtion to enter into any courses, work or medicals and someone from SEETEC Business Technology LTD would contact me on the phone to arrange an interview. She also said the person who normally would deal with my WFI is off for several months so my next WFI would not be for 4 months or more (weird).

That's OK by me but what about this work programme thing? Is it really a case of I only have to attend the one? If I go and do not wish to attend anymore because of my health I cannot be penalised for it no?

DWP advisors have instructions not to refer ESA Claimants appealing to be placed into the Support Group, to the Work Programme.

However, to appeal you will need to show that you meet the Support Group criteria, you may also need to show Good Cause why you have not lodged an appeal before, as the normal timescale for doing so is one month from the Decision date and no more than a maximum of 13 months. See the following;

Is there any risk to challenging a decision?

How long do I have to appeal?

How to submit an appeal

Qualifying for the Support Group

I'll admit I am not as up to date with the Work Programme as perhaps I should be, although we do not actually advise on this subject, but my impression was that once you were put forward to the Work Programme, you were committed to continuing to attend.

The following FAQ provides more information.

Dear Dick Emery

Is the “one mandatory work programme interview” you referred to an information session?

I’ve had 2 WFI’s, sandwiched around a ‘Work Programme Information Session’ The first WFI was like what you had and the second was a very brief feedback interview on the information session I attended.

There was no compulsion to join, and I didn’t. Though I believe if you do agree to join, it does then become compulsory.

Hope my experience helps.
