Any recommended length?

Any recommended length? was created by Gateway
Hello,

Can anyone give me any advice on at what point do the answers on the ESA50 become too long? My concern is that answers might become so long that the decision maker would not bother to read the form properly.

In my case, I have tried to answer with examples and repetitions, as detailed in Benefits and Work info. My answers come in total to about 9000 words. A disability benefits advisor told me that this meant there was a danger of the above, as the decision maker is unlikely to spend much time on it. They thought the length might result in a watering down of the information I have there. I'm not asking someone to comment on my own individual claim, just to give me some general advice if possible.

Thanks very much.

I am afraid there is no magic answer for this!

I know of successful claimants who submitted 50 A4 pages and others who stayed within the confines of the form.

The only advice I can give you is to ensure the content is legible and well presented (big blocks of text are more difficult to read), don't be afraid to repeat content if you feel you need to but try not to waffle.

I used to write reports for my work and I found that a second pass through a document, a day or two later, would often result in me shortening and simplying content, as I could look at what I had written with a readers eye.

Good luck

Gordon

Thanks very much for the reply, Gordon.

In the Benefits and Work advice, claimants are advised to give examples in each answer of things that assessors are advised to ask about in the face-to-face assessment eg standing on public transport and in shops. Do you have any advice on whether it is worth including an example for each of the things listed, when an example is available or might just one or two examples be sufficient (to avoid waffle, perhaps!)? I'm currently torn between putting in examples and trying not to write too much.

Perhaps it is impossible for you to answer this unless you were to see the examples.

Many thanks.

I'm afraid we can't advise members on the specifics of completing the ESA50, however as a general comment you should probably assume that the DWP Decision Maker has no direct experience of your condition(s) and a consequence may not be able to relate to any difficulties you have as a result.

I may have made my replies too long but I wanted to provide the answers to the questions truthfully. I took 3 weeks to complete the form and followed all advice from Benefits and Work, They have put me in the WRAG group. I have been unable to work since 2007. I have received DLA for 8 years full rate mobility. So I have now replied to them asking for written statements on why they think I am well enough to work. I have also sent further documentation detailing my medical history from 1974 to 2012. I was 60 in May. It seems that ATOS aim for the easy targets !I will probably have to go to appeal. My blood pressure has risen to a dangerous levels since I got the decision letter. :(
