Have I bypassed the medical stage? was created by Oshb5
Hi All
I started the Ib To ESA process around 2 months ago. I got the letter saying I had to have an assessment Then Atos rang Then a couple of days later mid May the ESA50 arrived and had to be back mid June
I did as I had read on many benefit related websites And that was to get help filling it in. I did this and got in touch with a local disabled union group that offered help. And over two meetings with a member they help/filled in the esa50 for me. The advisor told me to get as much supporting evidence as I could to send in with the form and to also send it in via rec delivery
I sent in the ESA50 back along with letters from Me My GP My therapist District nurse, Pain department and latest Surgeon So Atos should have received it mid June a few days before the time limit.

I had not heard anything from ATOS. Then today after coming in from a hospital appointment on the mat was a DWP letter saying my benefit was changing and that ESA will be replacing my IS on the grounds of illness or disability. And that I was entitled to income related ESA . The actual words used where " You have been placed in the support group because your illness or disability restricts the possibility of working. This means you do not have to take part in any work related activity but can volunteer to see a personal advisor if you want to. There is more information included in the letter."

Now iv been over the letter time and time again till its a blurr but still cannot find anything that explains the support group in fact everything else but..

I know I might sound dense or thick but seeing as iv heard nothing from Atos at all Then this latest letter arrives from the DWP what does it mean?? What about Atos what about the medical what about anything I just dont get it
Yes I know the implications of what the Support group means for me and am over the moon I think but what about the other stuff..I dont know how I feel id set myself up for waiting for a phone call and then a letter from Atos to come And got to term's with having a medical and had even set myself up to be going through the appeal procedure and even then still thinking I might not get in the support group What with the horror stories I have been hearing from fellow members..
Like I said I know I should be over the moon but I dont feel that way if you get what I mean?

Anyway Id also like to thank everyone on the site for all the words of encouragement and keeping me sane through the periods of me being so down I know I could always come here and get the enthusiasm I needed to hang in there..

Congratulations on your result.

I can understand your comments, you set yourself up for what you expect to be a big fight and it doesn't happen.

When you return your ESA50 to ATOS, they perform what is called a "pre-board" check. What this means is that they review your ESA50 and any attached evidence to see if they can make a recommendation, in your case they could, so they were able to return your file to the DWP without a medical.

As you are receiving Income Related ESA you may also qualify for some of the ESA Premiums, this should be automatic, but sometimes isn't :) It would be worth you speaking to your local CAB to make sure you are receiving everything you are entitled to.
