ESA decision after 6months do I appeal? was created by panther50
I suffer from depression and Lupus SLE. I have been on incapacity benefit for 10 years and before christmas got the letter to apply for ESA. I had a horrendous medical in January (another story!) and have received (almost 6 months later) their decision!! I have been approved for ESA and put into WRAG, but I am struggling to find out if I should appeal to be put into a support group, I have been advised by a disability helpline that the decision for support group is based on the total number of points you score and that I should appeal however, the DWP letter didn't tell me my score and it will take 2 weeks for their info to be sent out. I thought you had to score 15 on certain descriptors to qualify for it. I feel very pressured because despite them taking 6 months to make their decision I have only a couple of weeks to decide if I want to appeal and I can't find out the rules to know if its even worth me appealing.

Qualifying for the Support Group

Is there any risk to challenging a decision?

You can also send in form GL24 immediately should you choose to appeal, which doesn't require detailed information. It's enough to state for example "I do not believe that the Decision Maker has taken full account of my needs in their decision, and I wish to appeal to be placed in the support group. Further information will follow" is sufficient.

More information can be sent when you receive the reasons for their decision from the ESA Decision Maker. You can withdraw your appeal if having read the reasons for the decision, you no longer wish to proceed.
