Benefits question was created by bulliemad
hi i am looking to try and get a housing authority bungalow as the house im in is unsuitable for me, but i own my home, my question is if i sell my house and get say 50-60k for it, will i still be entitled to income based ESA? at the moment i dont even know if i can claim it as i got zero points at atos medical and am due a reconsideration soon, before it goes to appeal,i have a feeling i will also not be entitled to council tax or housing benefit, will this be right? i got the money to buy this house from compensation for and accident i had, years ago and is supposed to last me my lifetime, to help with the difficulties i face, but if i cant claim anything, no doubt it will be gone in a number of years, any advice appreciated

Hi bm,

If your capital, (savings etc) exceeds £16,000, you will not be entitled to any Income Related, Means Tested Benefit.

You are allowed upto £6000, for any sum between £6,000 and £16,000, there are pro-rata deductions.

We cannot advise you any further than this, you really need face to face professional advice, where the adviser has access to all your personal details.

Just to re-emphasise Bro58's suggestion that you get face face advice regarding this, as we don't advise on this area of benefits, there may be exemptions to the normal rules that would apply to your circumstances.
