answering dwp phone call was created by pjd
Hi there,

I have received the dreaded letter from the Dwp telling me that my incapacity benefit is being phased out and that I am now to be assessed for esa.

They say they will phone me in the next 10 days to talk about the changes. I know its been asked before but I just wanted to ask what the latest advice would be on whether to take the dwp phone call or not. Also they have listed my old phone number, am I obliged to phone them and give them my new one?.

Im getting panicky at the thought of talking to them and I know I will be unable to follow or remember a lot of what will be said, but I dont want it to count against me by not taking/making the call.

Any advice would much appreciated. Thanks.

As you say, this has been asked frequently in th past and there are many threads dealing with it.

You might find this helpful

The Transfer process

You do not have to answer any calls from DWP or give them a up-to-date number. In this case, the process will continue whether or not you take this call. However, thre are times when it could be in your interest to take a call, so we would not advise that you never answer.

My friend was in a simillar situation to yours, as she too had changed her number.

She did phone DWP, and all they did was talk her through the changes etc and told her ESA50 form would be posted and she must fill it out.

She told them that number they had on their records was no longer in use and she would prefer to be contacted in writing. DWP did not insist on contact number, but advised her that it would speed things up if they had one.

You will no doubt eventually recieve the form, so you may as well use your energies in filling it out as you will only have 4 weeks.

Hope this helps.

I missed the first call but took the second. In all honesty it's no big deal the woman I spoke too was very pleasant and friendly. She certainly wasn't abuse or rude, take the call would be my advice.

pjd, you can download an interactive copy of the ESA50 and make a start to give you more time.
