Hi,

Sorry if im being a bit dim, but could anyone tell how best to answer the manual dexerity question.(can you use either hand to press a button, turns pages of a book, pick up a £1 coin, use a pen and paper, and use a computer keyboard - some of them, none of them, it varies.

My hands are often very pained/stiff and achy on a daily basis, as well as suffering partial paralysis where I cannot use them at all.

When I am able to use my hands, it is not without an increase in pain and exhaustion within minutes and I have to stop and rest. I am not sure how to answer this?

Any help most welcome

The first thing to think about is how often and for what period of time you are effected. If this is for the majority of the time, then it is reasonable for you to define this as the limit of your capabilities.

Beyond that, in all honesty you seem to have done a good job in describing your problems in your post.

As always have a look at the ESA guides for further advice and the WCA Handbook, to see how ATOS look at these descriptors.

Thanks gordon,

I know Im being dim now, ha, but Im still not sure which way to answer, some of them, none of them, it varies. My instinct is to answer 'it varies' as my symptoms are frequently mild to severe throughout the day, and then explain my daily limitations. What do you think?

Also my sister will be filling out the esa form for me, should it sound like it is in my words, or in her words about me, if that makes sense.

Thanks

Hi PJD,
When I had to fill out my ESA50 form I spoke in my words and my husband typed everything into the online pdf form.
We wrote an accompanying letter to say that is what we had done so they knew I was not able to complete the form myself.
I answered no to any question that I was not able to complete a majority of the time.
I then explained my daily limitations on severe days and less severe days.

Hi pjd,

As Gordon has said you seem to have given a good answer in your other post.

If it varies, state that it does, don't feel forced into simply ticking a box, and leaving it at that.

Write your own comments in, as is often said on the forum make the ESA50 questionnaire fit your limitations rather than you fitting inside the ESA50's tight parameters.

As Gordon says if a limitation's severity affects you for the majority of the time, then state that.

i.e. The majority of the time would be for 12 hours and 1 second in any day, 3 days 12 hours and 1 second of any week, 2 weeks and 1 second of any 4 week period, 6 months and 1 second of any year, so on and so forth. :)

So you need to gauge as an average, whether you suffer for the majority of the time.

Just to add your sister can write in the first person, as if she was you, there is a section in the ESA50 where she can state that she has written it for you, giving reasons why she has done so.
