A couple of years ago, I was contacted by the DWP and asked to an interview with a compliance officer at my local Jobcentre Plus. The letter gave no indication as to what the issue was. My carer phoned the person who was to conduct the interview. He gave generously of his time the same day and told me exactly why I had been asked to see him. By the date of the interview, I had gathered enough evidence to demonstrate that there had been an error on the part of the DWP. It’s worth asking. Good luck.

Hi M,

I have personal experience of DWP Customer Compliance Officers. Last year, I received a letter from a CCO and a subsequent visit.

Apparently, one of my neighbours <sic> had reported that I had been seen carrying bags of sand and cement to renovate our apartment.

I am a wheelchair user and my apartment is only 15 years old.

The DWP CCO was very pleasant and it was her that informed me that over 85% of calls to the DWP fraud line are malicious.

My experience with a Compliance Officer at the JobCentre was quite pleasant. They were helpful and understanding. Unfortunately they were not the decision maker but just the gatherer of information.

I ended up a strange decision a few months later which I'm struggling to understand and have appealed against it.

I too have been "informed on" - I suspect by a neighbour, suffering from the Daily Telegraph version of "I'm sure they shouldn't be getting that (car/money) for that.(ME)"

I got the distinct impression that the person I talked to hated anonymous phone calls denouncing neighbours considerably more than they disliked possible fraudsters - possibly because they saw more nastiness than fraud when following them up.

Still, I'd endorse the "Have a witness," advice and even add a "Be careful what you say," rider. A few officials will be on the look out for any "irregularity". Get your story straight in your own mind and have any bits of paper which might help to hand.

It will probably be OK, but it does no harm to check.
