support letters was created by pjd
Hi,

Can you tell me if support letters have to be from doctors you have seen in the last 6 months. I saw a few doctors in november last year, and in february this year but the appointments were stopped because my symptoms were so severe that I couldnt remain at the sessions. - is it worth asking for letters from these people or not.

Also my gp has said she would write something to support my wish to have a home visit for the medical, because of the severity of my health. I don't know if atos/dwp will take any notice of it but Il send it anyway. What wording does she need to use for it to be supportive for me.

Thanks.

Hi pjd,

Letters of support from anyone who is aware of your limitations should help, and can be sent to ATOS/DWP, obviously treating HCP's letters would be hold more validity, although you can also send letters of support from friends, relatives or carers who are also aware of your limitations.

The more upto date the better, but anything from the past 6 to 12 months should be helpful, especially if your condition has not improved.

I don't know what ypur doctor may write, I am sure he will be experienced in this matter. However, I should imagine that any such letter would include information as to why you would not be able to attend a face to face assessment at an ATOS Mecical Centre, by using public transport, or otherwise, or in a Taxi.

Thanks bro58,

Is anything longer than 6-12 months no good. I had a neuro rehab team come to my home to treat my conditions in early 2011, and my conditions have not changed since then. Would this be too old to be considered by atos?

Hi pjd,

Any letters or Medical Reports / Confirmation of diagnosis, can be sent, no matter how old.

Especially if your conditions have not improved since the date of the above. They can help to show that your health conditions are long standing and/or progressive.

The thing to remember though, is that the decision will be made with regards to your limitations at the time of the decision, only.

Just one last question, is it better to have a support letter or can a medical letter sent from the consultant to my gp suffice?

Hi pjd,

Any letters/reports that specifically relate to the limitations that you suffer, which may help to show that you quailfy for an award of ESA, would be better.

However, it is O.K. to provide Consultant letters, etc, as well.
