ESA uprating letter - oddities therein was created by elaine pyrke
Brown envelope this morning, panic wasted as it turned out to be a letter telling me my ESA will be uprated in April.

First it tells me there is ‘extra money because you are in the support group’ – well I appealed last June that I should have migrated from IB into the SG not the WRAG, but I have had no response to my appeal (bar the acknowledgment), certainly no notification that it’s been accepted.

Second, it says ‘for the first week in December a Christmas Bonus of £0.00 will be paid’ – so has the Christmas Bonus been abolished?

Third, it has a statement which would only make sense if my transitional protection meant they were giving me extra money – the WRAG level is less than my transitional protection but the SG level is more. (‘Your income related amount is £61.22, however because you are entitled to contribution based ESA we will pay you £61.22.’ Hardly plain English.)

So do I write and ask them if they’d kindly confirm my appeal has succeeded?

Unfortunately this letter can often be the first notification that a claimant receives that an Appeal has been successul, but I would certainly contact the DWP and ask for confirmation and proper notification of the Decision.

The Christmas bonus should have been paid at the beginning of December, anyone receiving main phase ESA(CB) should have been eligible, amongst other benefits.

Hi Elaine
I have also received this letter this week. With regards to the Xmas bonus my letter says I will receive nothing. I think this is because of the date of your next assessment. I was put in the support group in Oct 12 with a prognosis of 12 months, therefore my next assessment is due in Oct13, as this is before the date of the next Xmas bonus, until I get reassessed they would not know if I would still be in support group and entitled to bonus for xmas 2013. Hope ypu understand me.

Thanks for this, Gordon, I may allow myself to get my hopes up a bit.

I will write for confirmation. Presumably to the office that sent the letter; they originally received my appeal but then passed it on to a different office to deal with it.

I can’t work out from the appeal guide what paperwork I should be requesting if successful at reconsideration stage. I want to know why they’ve allowed it (as it may help me make a late appeal on DLA), and when the merry-go-round starts again with the date of review.

Thanks again,
Elaine

Thanks Bro. I did receive the Christmas Bonus for 2012 (though it wasn’t itemised separately as before), but the letter seems to imply I won’t get anything in 2013, that’s the puzzle.
