ESA Payments was created by citymike
Hi can anyone answer my question.
I recently received a letter from JCP to tell me that from April13 my benefit(Support Group) payment will go up to £106.50.
A friend of mine who is also in the Support Group received a similar letter today saying his payment will go up to £106.50, but it then goes on to say, due to social security payment changes his money will increase to £116.50 from November 2013.
Why will he receive £10 a week more.
Thanks CM

I am afraid there is no way we can know why there payments are different from yours, perhaps they are on Income Related ESA and you are on Contribution Based?

Hi
As Gordon said it is probably to do with being IR related rather than CB.

for some obscure anomoly those on IR ESA are provided with more benefits /passporting etc to other benefits/ grants and the like than those on CB based ESA.
There is no recourse to this as even if you have 1p above the base rate for IR you are out of pocket. On average those who claim IR ESA can get up tp £100 a week more than those on CB ESA ,that does include all the passporting/ grants available etc.

This is a big sting in the tail for those on CB benefits including ESA support group however the ministers have refused to look at this anomaly and said there is no justification to do so!!!!!!

I have seen my friends letter today. It states he will receive £106.50 from April 10th 2013-November 27th 2013. Thereafter due to Social Security Payment changes he will receive £116.50.
On the page where it shows how the payment has been worked out it states that he is being paid contribution based ESA.
He would not be entitled to IR ESA due to his savings.
As the amount of the increase is £10, and it takes effect from the end of Nov I was wondering if it is something to do with the Xmas bonus which is usually paid in the first week of Dec. If this is the case the letter is very badly worded as it implies he would get the extra money every week.

I would not expect it to be the Christmas bonus as this is a seperate "benefit" and should not appear as an ESA payment.

The only thing I can suggest is that they get face to face advice, where an advisor can actually calculate what their payments should be.

I received exactly the same letter last year as the one your friend has got. The wording the same, it was to do with Christmas payment and that was it. I thought my payment was going up by £10 per week, but it didn't   . Hope this might be of some help.
