permitted work form pw1 was created by bisley
Do the moderators have access to a specimen form pw1 or know where I can download one? I am aware I can apply to the dwp for this form but would like to know what the form requires before doing so. Many thanks.

The form itself does not appear to be online, but a Freedom of Information request has resulted in the forms contents being supplied by the DWP, see

Thanks Gordon. The form pw1 in its notes, refers to work as part of a hospital treatment programme being permitted work, yet the www.gov.uk website omits this type of work as being classed as permitted work. Because of this, I had assumed, in error, that work as part of a hospital treatment programme was unavailable as permitted work under ESA.

I had thought that such work was classed as "supported permitted work" but where supported permitted work is referred to in the form, it is made clear that only someone who is a support worker in an organisation that supports and supervises the work can complete and sign this section.

This would not apply to my relative. He is an outpatient and is treated by a Psychiatrist. There does not seem to be anywhere for him or a CPN to complete and sign the form.

Do the moderators or anyone else have experience of how to go about getting approval for permitted work as part of a hospital treatment programme. It is my understanding that there is no limit on the hours worked or what can be earned under this type of permitted work.

As far as I am aware, there is only Permitted Work at either the lower or the higher limit, or Supported Permitted Work.

It sounds like this should fall under Supported PW, alternatively, is the hospital treatment programme counted as voluntary work (e.g. not paid), as this is treated differently?

The PW Lower limit is unlimited hours and a maximum of £20/w in earnings.

The PW Higher limit is less than 16 hours per week and earnings of no more than 16 the National Minimum Wage.

Supported PW is the same as the Higher limit with the additional requirement with the following additional requirement.

1. part of a treatment programme and is done under medical supervision while the person doing it is an in-patient, or is regularly attending as an out-patient, of a hospital or similar institution or

2. supervised by a person employed by a public or local authority or voluntary organisation engaged in the provision or procurement of work for persons who have disabilities.

Decision Makers Guide 49147

The simplest thing to do is to raise it with the DWP, as ultimately, they have to agree that the activity meets the requirements of PW.
