Hello all,

I get ESA Contribution based Support group, if I was to goto live abroad in another EU country, I am aware I can have this benefit exported and receive it there, but if I do, and I need to have a medical do I need to come back to the UK to have a medical or can it be done in the EU country. I dont know if I will goto live in another country yet but just curious to know? Maybe some people on here know?

The procedure in the past has been to carry out any assessment in the country that the claimant is living in using a local doctor under instruction from the DWP, whether this will be the case in the future is impossible to say.

In 2008 we seriously thought about going to live in an EU Country, Portugal.
We filled in the various forms re DLA changes ( Knowing we would lose the mobility content but still receive the care component).
Had a form to fill in re Incapacity Benefit and sorted that out and then it had to go to the Secretary of State for it to be confirmed that it was ok or not to move abroad.
All sorted and agreed.
However I had cold feet at the last minute, and we decided not to move in 2009 October.
With the current changes and things still to change I know we made the right descision not to move abroad as we would be financing it predominately on my IB/DLA and Industrial Injury benefit at 50%.
I would therefore not recommend moving abroad if this was your only income thru benefits especially as they are going to be removed from overseas EU and non EU in the next year or so. Discovered from papers still being written (not sure if it is what is called a white paper)

pusscatsmum or anyone else can you tell me how you went about it all? Who did you have to contact? how long did the process take? to get it All sorted and agreed? Also you mention something about white papers? What does it say about contribution based ESA Support group abroad and where can I see some of these white papers?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

I have allowed your post, but we do not provide advice on benefit entitlement outside of the UK, so I need anybody responding to this request to keep it on subject or we will have to lock the topic.

Thank you
