WHEELCHAIR ASSESSMENT was created by shrinathji
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone can advise on how can one get a "wheelchair assessment".

I read some time ago that a member managed to get one and won her case for S/G.

The reason i ask is that my friend has upper and lower body limitations and uses a crutch to help her walk. However, she is worried that Atos/DM may use the imaginary wheelchair, so would like solid confirmation that she definately cannot self propel a wheelchair.

Any advise will be most welcome.

Radhika.

Hi R,

Your first port of call would most likely be one's G.P., OT or Physiotherapist.

However, I do not know how kindly they would look upon a request for a Wheelchair Assessment that is aimed at proving that one can't be used, to fulfill the Mobilising activity of ESA ?

If the NHS are unable to help, or unable to help in time, I have heard of people paying a private OT to do such an assessment. You should be able to find someone by putting 'private occupational therapy' and your area into a search engine.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Bro58,

You are absolutely right, i do not think her treating consultants would be happy, especially due to the "cut backs", however, the problem is DWP and its assumptions of being able to self propel a wheelchair.

I will look at the link you have given in greater detail and see if there is anything on there she can submit in support of her ESA50, which she is still waiting for.

Hi Mrs H,

Just seen your reply, seems like a good idea if all fails.

Any idea if a private assessment will be accepted or have any members been sucessful with this and gained S/G????

Hi R,

You could also consider MHB's suggestion.

There would be nothing wrong with approaching one's G.P. , if they are well aware that your friend cannot possibly use a manual wheelchair, the G.P. may simply say that an assessment is not needed.

You could then request something in writing to this effect, in that the G.P. feels that a manually propelled wheelchair is not suitable for your friend's limitations.
