Hi

Firstly thank you for all the great guides on this site, very helpful.

I was transferred from IB to ESA work group (appealing for support group) and have a few questions if anyone could help.

1. The money I get has remained the same and there is no increase after the general rise of 1% in April. Will I not see a rise at all until the benefit rate for ESA matches the amount I received on IB?

2. Received letter telling me I qualify for both income based and contribution based ESA, they have put me on the CB for a year and then IB after 365 days. Is this correct? I though I would be put into the income related straight away? Also what do I need to do when the 365 days are up? Do I need to contact DWP to confirm the change to Income related or do they do it automatically?

3. Recently applied for DLA as advised to by Welfare rights, they have awarded me the lower rate mobility but no care component. A few of the reasons for not giving me the CC are incorrect. They didn't want to do a medical and did not request any info from my GP. Should I appeal and if I do will I lose the Mobility Component? Or can i just appeal the Care Component?

Also in case anyone else has had any trouble with their ESA payments, my first esa payment was on a different day without informing me. The second payment due today also didn't go in. When they rang me back they said it was a computer glitch, has anyone else had this problem? Never once had any trouble at all with IB payments.
Once again thank you for all the helpful advice.

To answer your questions

1. It sounds like you are receiving a Transitional Payment on top of your ESA(CB), this being the case, whilst you will see an increase in your ESA(CB) payments, it will be matched by a corresponding reduction in your TP amount, leaving the money you receive unchanged, this will be the case until the TP is eroded, April 2020, or you are no longer eligible for ESA(CB), whichever is the sooner.

2. Based on your post, I think it unlikely that you are currently receiving an ES(IR) top-up, although it is not impossible. At the end of the 365 days, if you are eligible for ESA(IR), then your payments should be automatically switched over. ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

If you are not eligible for ESA(IR), then your ESA(CB) can only be re-instated if you are placed into the Support Group or you are able to re-meet the Contribution conditions for ESA(CB).

3. We cannot give advise on whether to appeal or not, the choice is yours. In principle, you can appeal just the Care component, however, the DWP and/or the Tribunal panel are liberty to extend the revision to include the Mobility component as well. See

Is there any risk to challenging a decision?

How long do I have to appeal?

How to submit an appeal

Our DLA Appeal guide is on the following link

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/dla/#dlaappeals

and there are also additional documents that cover DLA Mobility in more depth that may be useful

4. I believe that whilst IB and ESA should be paid on the same day, IB is normally paid a day early, this may explain any lateness, the following explains payment days.

Benefit payment dates

Failing this, you need to contact the DWP about any late or missed payment.

Hi n,

Members have reported problems with their initial ESA payments going into the bank.

A friend of mine also suffered this, they were informed that problems occur due to the fact that ESA payments are "piggy backed" onto the programme used to pay JSA.

As Gordon says, you should ring the DWP if the money fails to go in. Be prepared to have to make 2 or more calls though, before you get through to someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Once the ESA payments have been executed properly, you should not have any further problems.

The DWP do seem to suffer a lot of "computer glitches"

Thanks for all the Info.

I'll think about appealing the DLA CC, but I might just leave well enough alone.

My payment has gone in now it is listed as a "faster payments" payment rather than the normal dwp esa payment.

Also just fyi my dla application took 3 weeks from start to getting the award letter.

I did try to complete it online, but their "interactive" website is very out of date and my computer (4 years old) will not support their antiquated system.

It just seems as if they do everything in their power to hinder you in any way they can.

Anyway thank you so much for all your help. Best wishes and good luck to everyone Don't let the bar stewards get you down
