Received the medical assessment report for my son today. It is all assumed that because he is going to university that he cannot have problems. Plus his father who was meant to just give him a lift ended up sitting in the assessment and the report refers to the comments his father made about myself and my OCD. It says how the father has said the mother has OCD and it says words to the effect that the reason my son has difficulties cooking is because he has not had chance to learn cos mothers OCD stops him doing things in the kitchen. (My son said he uses the microwave but cannot do more). Surely it is not right that my sons father can bring in my difficulties into my son's assessment and this be used against my son's case. I'm really cross !

I realise that it's frustrating but the assessors assumptions are reasonable given the father's comments, it would be something that you would have to explain in detail as part of any MR.

His father has not lived with us for many years and does not know either of us well

And that may be good reason why his comments should be ignored but if you were to ask for an MR you would still be playing catch up.

I don't know whether to do an MR. I wanted my son to get PIP as he will struggle doing part-time work if needing more money at uni. Also we need money to help with him coming back some weekends. It is £180 for one way in a taxi! Not sure he can handle public transport, (he is vulnerable, a bit of a target) Plus if my son is not on PIP, and if I am on ESA , then if he wants to come home some weekends I will lose the severe disability premium. In order for me to retain the severe disability premium then I have to be classed as living alone, apparently if my son quite often comes home at weekends I will not be classed as living alone. But if my son had PIP I would still receive the severe disability premium even if he came home every weekend. Is it impossible for autistic people at uni to receive PIP I wonder. All through the report it uses his going to uni to say he cannot have problems in each area.

The argument about his being at university is not an unreasonable one and you would have to explain how he manages, presumably on his own with the PIP activities. That does not mean that someone at college or university cannot claim PIP but whoever fills out the form will have to do a lot of extra work to explain how the claimant copes.
