I have been on esa for about 7 years due to physical and mental illness and was due for a reassessment recently. The whole build up from receiving the form to complete, to the assessment day itself has been horrendous and has truly left me on the brink of ending it all. On the day of my assessment I arrived 15 minutes early with a family member and i was very distressed from the moment we arrived. When my appointment should have started the receptionist came out and apologised and said it would be 20 minutes late and asked my family member if I was going to be OK as she could clearly see how upset and distressed I was, and this same process was repeated until after nearly 2 hours when both the receptionist and the nurse who was going to do my assessment came out and apologised profusely and said it is now too late to do the assessment and I would have to come back. I was so distressed and said I just want to kill myself and my family member told them it is disgusting how I have been treated and they just both continued to apologise and said I should really have had a home assessment but the nurse also said these are now only available for terminally ill people. I have been to see my Gp today and he is disgusted at my treatment and said he has received a fax from the nurse who said she was very concerned for my welfare, so he said he will reply to this fax asking why they now need to see me again after seeing me in this state. During the time I have received esa I have been repeatedly told that I should apply for pip and I have just never had the strength to do so and after this most recent traumatic experience I have slowly lost the will to live. I am so sorry to waffle on but just had to get this of my chest. P.S I forgot to say that I was in the assessment centre for 2.5 hours in total!

UNCLE M

I am sorry to hear that this has happened, I doubt it will to know that it is quite common and we regularly hear from other members who have had the same problem.

Hopefully, if an assessment is still required they will switch you do it in your home and it is possible that they may now decide that one is not required and they can do a paper assessment, especially if your GP keeps their promise and replies to their fax.

Uncle M,
Unless somethings changed in the last month, I had a home assessment. My doctor wrote a letter stating the difficulty I would have trying to get to an assessment centre and I had no probs them coming to my home. I'm not terminally ill.
I think you stand a good chance after what's happened, obviously you could not go through that again. Your doctors support in writing a letter explaining you can't go through that terrible experience again would be a great help and a home visit is requested..

Thank you Gordon and ploppy for your replies. I have today received another appointment for the same assessment centre in 3 weeks time and I just don't think I can go on much longer as I feel so ill and still recovering from last weeks failed assessment. I just hope they change their mind and say I don't need another assessment when they receive the letter from my doctor.

And please, you must not apologise for 'waffling on'. As you say it is horrendous what has happened to you. I do hope that your GP can step up to the plate here and get you the home visit you so clearly deserve. Kindests of regards PP

Hi Uncle M

I too had the same problem! waited for my appointment after arriving early...in total 2 hrs and then 90 minutes in the assessment. I have numerous mental and physical conditions and when i received the WRAG appointments, i just could not cope with the stress of it all. I was awarded higher rate PIP Daily Living and Mobility a few weeks earlier, after jumping through those hoops and removed from my local JS centre and asked to travel miles to Ingeus all my previous appointments were telephone based)...at this point i refused. Asked that until my MR was decided, i would not go. (especially when an employee telephoned me to state that i had one chance to attend then any further missed appts would ensue sanctions!) I am now fully aware that the sanction will arrive and all my PIP will be used to avoid going into debt and trying to keep myself from going into major decline. The car ordered to enable me to get some sort of mobility will now be cancelled and then they will watch me go through more stress.
To cut a long story short. The medical assesment was littered with mistakes and omitted details and paperwork given and i have been told that they will not overturn the decision. I am now waiting for it to come back from another department, checking my details before i go off to appeal. I had a cardiac test today and they informed me that i may have another assessment on that outcome...the last thing i need is another assessment!
Even though i was in the same group last year, my ESA has reduced...not sure why?
Please do not think you are on your own with this, it is happening to many others and the constant stress is crippling for us all.
