Hi Kev,

Once you apply for PIP you will get the PIP2 form to complete within a week or two and will have just under 4 weeks in which to get it back. If you think your ESA report will be helpful you will need to wait until you have a decision before you request a copy. DWP usually send them out quite quickly. However, when there are delays, they tend to be lengthy!

The criteria for PIP are very different from ESA. You will need to complete the PIP2 form in depth and it is possible that you will need another face2face. If you do use the ESA report in support of your PIP claim, you will need to explain how it relates to the PIP descriptors.

There is no downloadable copy of the PIP2 form. Each form sent out by DWP has a unique barcode that identifies the claimant, it is very important that this is what is returned to DWP. You can type up your answers on the comp, print them out and attach to the form if this is what works for you.

Give the DWP office dealing with your claim a call, they can update you on how your claim is going. You can also request the ESA85 but it is standard practice for ESA claims not to release this until the claimant has been notified of the Decision, so don't be surprised if they don't send it at the moment, if they do then it should take 7-10 days to be received.

I'm afraid an ESA assessment report cannot substitute for a PIP assessment, the criteria is too different between the two benefits.

There is no electronic version of the PIP2, but you could prepare your answers on your computer and attach them to the form with suitable notes about where to look for each question.

Thanks Mrs Hurtyback and Gordon, much appreciate your helpful responses :)

I will call the DWP and see what they say about the ESA assessment. Is it Maximus who do the PIP assessments?

Hi all,

I rang the DWP yesterday and eventually got thru to someone quite helpful. She confirmed that they received the report on 25th Aug from Maximus of my assessment (my assessment was on 21st Aug) but that a decision had not yet been made. She did however post out the ESA85 and I received it today.

I must admit I'm relatively happy with the level of detail and accuracy which is encouraging (I did have it recorded anyway just to be sure). The assessor didn't go into all my health conditions, something which I queried him about at the time and he assured me he had enough information to recommend that I meet the criteria for limited capability for Work and WRA. And sure enough that is what he states on the ESA85. A few queries:

1) I'm aware that it's possible the decision maker may disagree - how likely is that?

2) The assessor also states that I should be reviewed again in the medium term - how long is that likely to mean? Does area matter? (I live in London)

3) I think there are quite a few bits of info in the ESA85 which could definitely help my PIP claim so I will take Mrs Hurtybacks advice and submit, explaining the links to PIP descriptors. Do you think I should proceed with PIP application before I get my ESA decision? I'm thinking that if the decision maker doesn't put me in the support group this would a man recon and possible tribunal. Would this complicate my PIP application if I use ESA85 as supporting evidence for PIP?

4) When first applying for PIP is it just a case of ringing up and giving general info asking for a form or do they ask about medical conditions etc on the phone?

Many thanks!

1. Probably no more 10% of the time, usually because even the DM can see that the report is at complete odds with the evidence or because the assessor has not applied the Descriptors correctly.

2. If you are put in the WRAG probably 12 or 18 months.

3. Given it's proximity I would wait so that you know what you are dealing with. Also, if you do have to do an MR then you don't want to have to be completing a PIP2 at the same time, I'm mot talking months, just weeks.

4. The PIP Claim guide explains the process.
