Absolutely petrified, home assessment in 3 weeks. was created by JeanCannon
I have just received a letter with my appointment for a home assessment for PIP in just over 3 weeks time. I am absolutely dreading it, any advice please?
I have been trying to read the guides, but have trouble taking it in.
Thanks

There's a section at the back of the claim guide that specifically covers the assessment process and the questions you are likely to be asked. Home assessments are not significantly different from the ones carried out at the Assessment Provider's offices. You can have someone with you if you want and it is your decision where the interview is held.

Really there is no need to dread an assessment whether at home or at a centre.
With a home assessment, be mindful that you are used to coping at home so your diffuculties may not be so obvious. Just be your self , you do not need to make any special effort, you are not going on a date, keep your daily routine as you normally would. So, if at the time of the assessment you are stil in your PJ's then that is fine.
You will have the worlds leading expert on your condition with you, so teach the assessor what it is like to be you. Try and paint a picture of how you are affected every day.
When asked questions, take your time answering them, don't be rushed. The best answer you you can give to any question is " no but ................ ". As an example when asked can you walk 100 metres your answer might be "No , but on a good day I can manage 20 metres if I rest part way "
When you answer a question "Yes but....." The assessor has stopped listening at "Yes"
Try it in every day life. Answering "No but .. " to any question usually promotes another question. When you greet someone with a positive ie "how are you invariably we respond " I am fine thanks " or similar. We do this even when visiting our GP. If you respond in the negative for example " not so good today " this will usually get the response " What is the matter " or similar.
So, when you have your assessment, be your self warts and all.
Oh and by the way, the worlds leading expert on your condition is you. Nobody knows how you are affected better than you.
best of luck

Spot on David. I've got mine this week. We can only do our best. I fully expect to get 0-hope for the best, be prepared for the opposite. One step at a time. I've not got the energy to stress and don't want my health to deteriorate further from this. Good luck everyone.

Hi Jaycie,
The 'claim guide' is the PIP guide that you would have used to help you complete the PIP2 form.
If you did not use this guide, for whatever reason, you can find it in the 'Members Only Guides' section that is linked on the left hand side of this page.
