Length of PIP asessment was created by Prudent
Hi,

I am just wondering how long the face to face asssessment for PIP should last? I took my daughter for an assessment today. She was very distressed as she was experiencing psychosis and she is also physically week as she has anorexia. She was in hospital earlier this week due to both and we evidenced that. Yet despite me discussing how unwell she was at the start of the assessment the process took 2 1/2 hours. At the end she pointed out just was just a reassessment so she had not done a fuller assessment. Is this usual?

I think it was one of the most difficult assessments I have been in with the MA trying to put phrases in my daughters mouth and then changing the phrasing if we picked up on that and corrected it. Often it took two or three corrrections before she stopped misrepresenting what we had said. For example we had to repeat that my daughter is too weak to lift saucepans or plates with food on, but she was said 'you can't lift a saucepan, but you can lift a pot containing food and filled kettle'. When we corrected it again she said 'you can lift food out of a microwave' and we then had to repeat that her psychosis means she is suspicious of the microwave and wont use it .She also seized on things like when my daughter said in a two weeks span she can walk once on average the 100 m to the local shop and changed this to 'has no problem walking anywhere'. I have been reading and re-reading the descriptors and stood my ground using the pharses like reliably, consistently and repeatedly a lot. I also took 10 pages of detailed notes. It felt a real slog and unnecessarily so. I did raise that we seemed to be re-iterating every point several times and she said it was her job. In any previous assessment they have only gone over points where they needed clarification. How common is this experience?

2 1/2 hours is very long for an assessment, the average is about 1 hour.

You should be able to request a copy of the report from the DWP office managing your daughter's claim by phoning or writing to them.

PIP Decisions usually take 2-4 weeks.

Thank you Gordon. This has confirmed my view that it was a long assessment. At what point should I request a copy? I am very concerned that it may still be riddled with inaccuracies.

At any time after two days have elapsed from the assessment, you need to allow time for the DWP to have received it.

Thank you, we will do that and see how it compares to my notes. I have just re-read my original post and would like to apologise for the poor grammar and spelling. It reflects just how gruelling I found the assessment this morning.

I will post an update when we get the medical report as it may help other users.

Just a wee update:

My daughter phoned the DWP yeterday and was told it will be two to three weeks before the report is available.

She gave my consent to them for me to talk today as I felt this didn't tally with what I read. I spoke to someone for about half an hour. He told me report are sent to them 2nd class and the earliest they would get it would be at the end of next week.

I asked about the length of the asessment and was told it should have been about an hour. I asked about the relevance of some questions e.g. my daughter was asked about how she managed school. She left 8 years ago! I was told this is one of the questions they use to check memory. I had answered the question for her and this led to sub questions directed at me, so it cannot have been about her memory.
