Help with ESA50 - Q6 Communication was created by Summerlands
I am slowly working my way through the ESA50 form and am having trouble with Q6 Communication...

My condition means I loose the ability to speak regularly (in fact, of all the timing, it happened half way through my call with DWP the other week to begin a claim for ESA, luckily husband was on standby  ).

I can think clearly what I want to say, but I can't make any words / sounds. It can come on slowly / with some warning (having more difficulty forming certain sounds or whole words and having to speak slower, sounding horse or nasal) or go completely with no warning. Each episode lasts anywhere between 10mins - 2hrs. It happens most days, sometimes two times in a day. So on average 'daily' I think is a fair description.

It's worse when I am tired or stressed. Of course often the times when you're stressed or feeling unwell / tired are the times you most need to be able to speak!

I know from reading here there is a consideration around using devices or being able to write as a stand in for talking? (or is that more with PIP, I am also doing a PIP claim form at the moment too?) :S

When these episodes happen I try to 'fill in' by writing things down, or I have an app on my phone (recommended by Speech and Language Therapist) which I can turn text to voice. The trouble with these is that they take much longer to prepare a message - so whilst they can stand in, they aren't easy / quick. Also if I am also having issues controlling my right (usual) hand, I then have to try to operate the phone / write with my left hand, making things even slower. Evidence from life is I can't *always* convey an important message, like danger. For example my kids have gone to step into the road before when it's not safe and I have to try and grab them as I can't say 'stop!'. So I assume that I tick 'it varies' and explain all this?

(thank you!)

You need to clearly explain how you are effected, for how long and under what circumstances, I would certainly include the example of your children at a road.

In this particular case, I do not think your using aids such as text to speech software would be relevant, as this is not aiding you to speak but removing the need for you to do so.

Make full use of "reliably" and "on the majority of days", I would think "to a necessary standard" would be particularly applicable.

Be aware that the assessor, if you have a face to face assessment will be paying particular attention to your being able to communicate with them, so if there are reasons on the day why you are able to do this without problem then you need to explain these on the day.

Also medical evidence confirming your issues will be particularly important.
