Hi, my name is Kat, and would like some advice on claiming PIP from DLA.

I currently receive ESA Cont Based in the Support Group, I have been claiming this for a number of years and was moved onto it from Incapacity Benefit. I claim for mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, being unable to cope with everyday situations and finding it extremely hard to leave my home. As far as I am aware this is an indefinite award.

I also receive DLA at the lower rates both for mobility and care, this is for the same issues as detailed above. Again, I think this is indefinite.

October 2015 I suddenly became ill with a great deal of pain, when visited my GP I was initially diagnosed with a viral infection but as the weeks wore on it didn't ease at all. I was then diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (not something I am completely comfortable with) and prescribed with lots of medication. I also attend a pain clinic.

I would like to change my claim for DLA to PIP, but haven't been invited to. My needs are greater but I am petrified of losing the DLA even at the current rates.

So to sum up, these are my illnesses:

Anxiety, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Type 2 Diabetes, Under-Active Thyroid. I take 34 prescribed tablets per day, 8 tablets that I buy and inject once a day. Four of the tablets are morphine, 8 codeine, 2 sleeping tablets, another 4 that help me sleep as well as give pain relief plus another 3 that do the same. Needless to say, I am quite sleepy most of the time.

Please help if you can. It's taken me a lot to gain the courage to post

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

I would recommend that you have a good read of our PIP claim guide before you proceed with a PIP claim. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

The assessment criteria for PIP are very different from DLA and the new benefit has been engineered to reduce the disability budget by some 20%, recent statistics show that 48% of DLA claimants being moved to PIP receive a reduced award or even no award at all.

If you have any questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi Kat
Don't know if this helps but I was in similar position to you. I had needed a lot more help for about a year but was afraid to instigate transfer from DLA to PIP in case I lost my award (low care and high mobility)
Before reporting a change of circumstances to DWP I contacted GP surgery and asked for copy of medical records for the past 2-3 years. This cost just £10. Then I highlighted all the relevant points, letters from consultants etc. I also contacted health professionals and asked for letters to back up a claim. Not all health professionals are keen on giving supporting evidence.
Once I had all this information I went through the PIP guide on this site to try and gauge if I had a valid claim for PIP.
I felt I had a chance so only once I had gathered ALL the relevant evidence did I phone DWP to report change in circumstances.
Fortunately for me I got awarded high care and mobility.
I can only suggest that you gather all your evidence first, go to the PIP guide and then decide whether or not to go ahead with a claim. Sorry, but only you can decide.
If you do claim then send copies of medical records and not originals.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
