Permitted work questions was created by King of pain
Hi all,

Its been over a year now since I last worked and having gotten my PIP (std daily / mob) and ESA (support grp) awards during early / mid 2016 I would like to do something within the permitted work guidelines, I have some questions regarding permitted work, just to explain briefly osteoarthritis in my lumbar spine is my major problem so the work I can do is pretty limited, forget standing, walking or lifting, I cant sit upright for too long either which all combine to seriously limit my abilities, this said I'd at least like to try to do something to keep the grey matter ticking over, the questions that spring to mind are as follows...

Do I involve the Job centre or DWP only once I've found some work or from the point I start looking, do they have any form of help available for me in my search similar to WRAG?

Does the Job centre / DWP have a say in what type of work I can / cant do and what level of form filling / hoop jumping is involved?

Am I correct in thinking any earnings up to the 16 hours / £115 per week will not affect my housing benefit?

Should I find some kind of work what level of involvement / monitoring will the Job centre / DWP undertake, if I am able to find something am I opening a door for them to say I can work part time and I end up having my ESA stopped and put on to a different benefit, or to retrospectively look into my awards?

Your input will as ever be greatly appreciated, Many thanks.

You don't need to involve the DWP until you have found a job that you want to do but you should not start the job until they have agreed that it meets the criteria for PW.

The work that you do must be reasonable in regard to your stated limitations, so as a deliberately silly example; if you took a job delivering the post and you had problems with walking or with going out, then this would be a red flag for the DWP.

There is a single form to complete, the DWP will send you a copy when you tell them that you are thinking of doing PW.

Earnings from PW should be disregarded from ESA and HB but you will need to deal with issues of tax, etc.

Starting PW is not a reason to initiate a reassessment unless the PW is clearly at odds with the reasons that you receive ESA, when you are reassessed those assessing you will be aware that you are doing PW and it will be something that they consider and may lead them to make assumptions on your problems.
