Couples ESA but not living together query was created by Robinson_jon
Hi mods.

My partner and I both receive Contribution-based ESA and are in the Support Group, therefore we both receive £109.30 per week into our separate bank accounts, as couples on this rate do.

Due to my partners' and my own complex needs, I am considering moving out for a few months, but we aren't going our separate ways. The question I have is: can we continue claiming couples ESA but at different addresses? If I change my address will we have to change our situation to single?

Also, we both receive PIP at the enhanced rate. As we are both on ESA and no-one is receiving Carers Allowance, we were going to apply for one of the enhanced/severe disability premiums. Can we still do this if I'm living at a different address?

Thanks in advance.

The DWP are not treating you as a couple at this time, your ESA and PIP are being treated as individual claims, so your moving out will not effect either claim.

To be paid a Premium for ESA, one of you has to make a claim for Income Related ESA, this will be paid as a top-up to their ESA. This will be affected by whether you are together or not, the DWP will have to decide whether you remain a couple or not.

I would get face to face advice, before making any changes, a trained advisor can work out what you would receive while together and apart, they can also help you if there are problems with you living apart.
