ESA Claim for disabled couple was created by Jane Doe
Hello,

I've been advised today that I may need to put in a claim for ESA as I've recently been diagnosed with a disability that prevents me from working at present.

My partner (living together) already receives income related ESA and is in the support group. I believe I already exist on his claim as he gets extra money for being in a couple.

Am I entitled to ESA in my own right? If not, how do I meet my national insurance contributions? Would I be entitled to any assistance from the job centre to look for suitable employment if I'm not claiming ESA?

Confused! :S

Thank you :)

If you have been working during the last two complete Tax Years, then you should be eligible for Contribution Based ESA.

If you have not worked in sufficiently then you are only eligible for Income Related ESA and only one person in a couple can make a claim.

You can only receive NI Contributions through work or registered self-employment, ESA and other benefits only pay NI Credits which count towards a Full State Pension.

If you can't make your own claim for ESA, then the only other benefit that will provide NI Credits would be either Carers Allowance or Carers Credit but this will require you to provide 35 hours of care a week to someone with a qualifying benefit.
