PIP Home Visit was created by LadyLuna
PIP Home Visit letter arrived and my appointment is next week.

I will be getting 2 cassette recorders for the interview and informing them in good time I will record the assessment.

I have a dog who will be at home as OH cannot take him to work with him. He will be away in the kitchen but will bark and howl as he suffers separation anxiety from me. If he was with me during the assessment he would just bark at the assessor as we don't get many visitors and he gets over excited.

I am extremely nervous as I am aware they watch everything you do. I am going to get my OH to lay out my ID and meds before he goes in the morning. Unfortunately he can't stay at home as he is extremely busy at work. I wouldn't want anyone there to be fair - bit embarrassing!

Is there any advice you can offer me to prepare for this assessment please?

You really need to contact the Assessment Provider immediately if you intend to record the assessment, the assessor will need to agree to be recorded and if the current one that is booked does not they may have to rearrange the current appointment.

Does everybody get a home visit when applying for PIP or is this whilst claiming? Under what circumstances do people get a home visit? Are these usually by appointment or unannounced?

Do they really watch everything you do and nose around and judge items in house/ state of house etc?

You do hear stories about this but never know how true or common place they are. As has been said before people only tend to write about the bad experiences and not the good.

Hi Harry,

The home visit is part of the assessment/reassessment process.

The claimant usually requests this and that request is unlikely to be granted without a doctor's letter in support.

Conversely, the assessment provider occasionally takes the claimant by surprise by scheduling a home assessment when one was not requested.

The form of the assessment will be the same wherever it is carried out.

The assessor has no right to 'snoop' around the house - nor have we ever heard of one wanting to do so.

I have just rung them. They seem to think it's ok. If not they said they may need to rearrange.

Can they refuse to be recorded? I thought we had the right to have it recorded? Maybe I misunderstood.

Any other advice as I have a fluctuating condition?

Hi LL,

The assessment providers are supposed to accept the request to record if they can but it is not an absolute right for the claimant to record. The assessor is perfectly within their rights to refuse to be recorded (although one cannot help but wonder why they might do so!).

I suggest you read your copy of the PIP2 and our PIP guide thoroughly before the appointment.
