Help with a form of words. was created by simonphillips21
In statement 1, Preparing food, the DWP Guideline basically says to ignore obese people. I am 6'7" and 23st. My weight issue is caused by poor diet (a result of me forgetting to eat and when I do, it's biscuits, cereal and bananas) plus I can't exercise (I have mobility issues). I need my brother to prompt me to eat a proper mean cooked at his house because I can't use the stove. .My weight has been the same for about 4 years.

So, how would I phrase this on my mandatory reconsideration Thingy?

I would ignore the issue of your being obese at this stage.

You mention two problems; that you need prompting to prepare and cook a meal and that you can't use a stove. You need to expand on both of these to explain why you cannot "reliably" prepare and cook a meal on the majority of days.

So why do you need prompting? This must be more than it simply being easier to eat biscuits and cereal, there must be an impediment that needs to be overcome.

You say you can't use a stove, why? PIP only looks at your ability to use a hob, not an oven so your answer needs to be restricted to this. Why can't you use aids to help you and why won't assistance from someone else (even if it is not available), help?

Thanks for that Gordon. I had reached a complete mental block. Is the following more like it?

You need an aid or appliance to be able to prepare and cook a simple meal.
Points awarded 2.

The 2014 award awarded 4 points as I needed assistance/supervision in preparing and cooking food.

The visiting Health Professional asked if I would be able to prepare food if I was sat, I said possibly but it would be difficult. This was confirmed by Ms Tina Warren who was also present at the assessment. Ms Warren is a mental health professional as well as my friend.
I said was that although I could prepare the food I would not be able to cook it as I am unable to stand for long, cannot use a perch stool (my balance is such that I would fall off the stool, my kitchen area is too small to accommodate a perch stool and me safely) and I have tremors in my hands and legs. As I have my refrigerator on the work surface (a cant reach into it if it is at floor level) there is insufficient area for me to use an alternative electrically based cooking method safely. There is no gas supply to the property.

I cannot use a microwave cooker (even if there was room), as I am prone to putting in metallic objects (like a spoon) or failing to realize there may be aluminium foil in the packaging. Setting timings gives me some problems as using dials is difficult because of my hand tremors. I have destroyed a few microwaves like this is the past.

As I have my refrigerator on my work-surface so I can reach its contents, I do not have room for one either. The Health Professional saw the size and nature of my small kitchen

I also tend to forget if I have any of the cookers rings on, and thus there is a risk of fire and injury. I do not have the cooker powered and told the Health professional this.

Therefore, as I cannot prepare and cook a meal without assistance, I feel the points awarded should be 4.

The one comment that I would make is that a lot of the issues appear to derive from the size of your kitchen, the problem with this is that PIP looks at the claimants issues not particularly the environment that they are in although there are notable exceptions to this.

My concern is that a DM may decide that these reasons are not ones that should lead to an award, a Tribunal may take a different view.

So I think you need to change the emphasis and make your own problems the primary reason why you cannot Prepare Food and the logistical problems the become secondary to this.

Also, the symptoms that you mention; dizziness and shaking hands, etc., are not related to any conditions, even if you have mentioned these in your PIP2 I would still explain why you have these issues in your MR.
