Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone could advise how they might go about my problem if it were them?

.I'm in the process of switching from DLA to PIP and I'm at the medical assessment stage (apt scheduled for next week) but I am also in the middle of moving to ground floor accommodation which is going to ease some of my problems due to my disabilities with stairs, smaller flat to maintain etc. I filled out the form as living in a big, first floor maisonette (stairs inside too) which was all obviously correct at the time of sending back

I realise I have to inform them of this change. My problem is that my move date is not yet confirmed but most certainly in the next 2 -3 weeks

Should I go along to the assessment and not mention about moving, although I noted on my form that more suitable accommodation was being sought, or ring them before my apt next week to tell them I will be moving soon?

My worries are that I don't know exactly how I'll be/adapt at the new place (although obvs no stairs will help ease my daily life) but also I want to avoid having to go through this medical next week, then maybe having to fill in the forms all over again (I did make copies), but most of all maybe having to go for another medical again as it's so stressful and very difficult for my friend to take time off work to accompany me.

I realise you can't fully advise but I'd be most grateful if anyone could say how they might work it in the same circumstances.

TIA
Kind Regards,
M.

Apart form the logistical problems of ensuring that the DWP have the right address for where you are living I don't believe you need to say anything more.

PIP considers your problems not the ones that where you live creates or eases. As an example; one of the tests is whether a claimant can get into or out of a standard bath, the test is about their abilities, they don't even have to have a bath to score.

Thank you for your reply Gordon.

Yes, I see, you are right. I wasn't really seeing it in the context of the questions that are asked on the forms (God knows why as I studied them and their exact meanings hard enough!) I suppose I was getting myself worried about the fact that when you go to the assessment they ask you things like where you live, how many stairs up to your flat, is your bathroom/toilet upstairs, do you manage to do your own housework, etc.

I typed my answers out as I can't write for long and I gave very extensive answers detailing where I have real difficulties, especially with the stairs meaning on occassion I am unable to get down them to get something to eat or indeed up them to the toilet and so I have a commode which I use on the bad days when I don't think I'm going to make it. I'm not planning on taking the commode to the new place as the bathroom is downstairs, plus there's no room for it.

I certainly see what you are saying, however with what I have said above and what I know they will ask at the assessment, this is what is worrying me.

Hi Gordon,

Sorry, just to add...

Another example...
Currently it's very difficult to shower/wash my hair as I only have a plastic push-on-tap shower and it means I can't complete the task well, if at all, as I can't keep my arms up long enough but the new place will have a power shower so I'm hoping I can do it easier/more often.

As it seems connected to achieving some of the activities, this is where I feel unsure.

Also, when you got to the assessment and they ask you the question, such as, do you manage running your home, then a 5 bed house (for example!) or a bedsit is going to make a difference, surely?
I don't understand this? Am I getting this wrong? as they do ask you and your answer to questions such as these and things like doing your own shopping are noted on the report sent to the DM.

Thanks again.

Turning this around, the issue is with your being able to reliably and on the majority of days to hold your hands up to your head in order to wash your hair, if it is advantageous to your scoring points then you can argue that that the power shower would be an aid, but you may struggle to have this accepted.

They may ask about how you manage your house and if they do then they will make assumptions, but in all honesty they will likely make the same assumptions for a one bedroom apartment on one level as they would for a five bedroom one on two.

Yes, I do see where you are coming from. I think I've worked myself into such a state over this that I can't see straight!

Anyhow, I survived the assessment and she seemed very kind and concerned so I pray that was genuine. She seemed to want to know more about my anxiety and depression. I think in all honesty that my physical and medical evidence speak for themselves so just have to wait and see now.

I really would like to thank you again for taking the time to reply. It's been a great help and eased my anxiety.

Best wishes to you.

Regards, M.
