Hi all,

New on here as really need peoples experience and advice on this...
I have been on long term sick for 11 months and ssp has now ended so I am about to apply for ESA.

Me and my partner want to live together in the near future and Im worried what consequences this will have on my ESA. Im guessing I will lose housing and council tax benefit but im unsure about esa?

Any help appreciated.

Jules x

ps my partner is a teacher and will be working approx 24 hours next year.

Hi J,

We cannot advise on individual claims, nor are we able to answer queries on means-tested benefits such as housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Moderators role is to give further information on the guides in the 'members only' area of the website.

However, if any member knows the answer, please feel free to add your input.

you might be better off you might be worse off,
apart from council tax and housing benefit you would have to look at what affect such a move would have on tax credits too you really need to get advice from experts

Do you know if you will be entitled to contributions-based ESA? If so you would still get that, because it's based solely on your own National Insurance contributions in the last few years, and co-habitation/your partner's income wouldn't come into it.

But for income-related ESA, and any other means-tested benefits like HB/CTB, his income would be taken into account.

CAB should be able to do you a 'better off' calculation, and also work out if you're likely to get contributions-based ESA.

All the best
Elaine
