Why is it important not to make eye contact.

Read the Glossary of LIMA examination findings on the Incapacity resources page.

Although I wouldn't say don't make eye contact with the doctor, it is important to be aware of the assumptions that ATOS make, based on your behaviour.

just because its posted on the web dont mean its right

It's not just posted on B&W, it's official guidance for Medical Services on behalf of the DWP.

I think phrenology is a much under used science.

Tories have square heads etc

Going back to the subject, I still think the assessment for medical health is incredibly naive and simplistic.

Each disability, set of disabilities is individual.

If there's an argument on appeal regarding your appearence, behaviour, skin tanning, or the level of your eye-contact, I'm afraid this one needs to be video recorded.

Hi Len,

The best advise is to have a witness in the medical room with you taking notes. Dont be ashamed or embarrassed to say why the person is there with you. make it clear that you need to have it straight in your own mind that everything you need to address is covered thus the reason for your witness.

My own personal opinion on good eye contact is, yes there is no doubt in my mind that they use this against you. i have had thgis used aginst me on 2 dla medicals. My husband has had good eye contact used aginst him recently during an ESA medical. But.....I threw this little comment straight back at them when I again made good eye contact with the 3 members on 2 dla tribunals. the first I lost, but my statement of reason clearly accepted i was honest. the second I won unanamously so again my good eye contact worked in my favour.

Real people who understand that not everyone with severe mental problems are unable to make good eye contact will be able to see this for what it means ie HONESTY. Atos, some DM's etc do so much cherry picking that they bite on to things like this and make a big issue about something that isnt the same for everybody. The same way like they dont have a clue about proper physiotherapy for physical probs when they say stupid things like "good grip, no substantial difficulties" after they have asked someone with carpul tunnell to squeeze their finger once.

Good Luck

Kathy
