gift of money on income support/ESA ? was created by Gina
Not sure this is the right kind of question for this forum but I am a bit worried about this. I am currently on income support with a disability premium. Recently I was sent the form to switch me over to ESA. I sent that back before Christmas and had the medical assessment last week. I used the information on this site to help me complete the form and face the assessment. Things seem to be going okay but I am still waiting to hear their decision.
Meantime my mother who is 86 wants to give me the sum of £1,500 just as a back up because I have no other security for emergencies. I thought this wasn't possible because I thought a sum of money just arriving in a separate account of mine would arouse suspicion and also I thought on income based income support I'd not be allowed any kind of savings. However my brother told me it was fine for me to have up to £6,000. I Googled it and that does seem to be the case and yet I'm not sure about it. My income support is not contribution based but income based and if I get ESA that will be income based as I do not have enough national insurance for contribution based benefit. Is it still the case on income based benefit I would be allowed to open an account just to keep this £1,500 as a back up from my mother ? Paranoid about getting into trouble.
Can anyone advise me on this ?

Both Income Support and ESA take no account of savings and assets totalling less than £6000.
