Hi, I'm currently receiving pip and cb esa in the wrag . I have ms and I'm unfortunately reaching the point where my partner is going to have to give up his job to look after me full time.
I know about carers allowance but I'm unclear about what happens with my esa? Will my partner be added to my claim? Do we have to make a new joint claim? If so will my esa be stopped and we'll be left without money until it's sorted?
I'm really worried about how we'll manage but we've put this off as long as we can.

Hi June,

A contributory claim for ESA relates only to the claimant, another person cannot be added.

If you will have a very low income when your husband gives up work, you might be able to convert your claim to income-related or he might be able to claim income support (I think this depends on you not living in an area where UB is fully live).

This is not something we can really explore on the forum as it would need you to disclose information about youe financial situation. This is something about which you should get face2face advice.

You can try doing an internet search for 'welfare advice' and your town, area or postcode.

Thank you
Would that be possible then, for my esa to stay as it is and for my partner to claim CA and IS separately? I didn't think we could claim both separately.
UC isn't fully live where I live yet, thankfully and I would expect our income to be low enough.
I'm hoping to ask CAB for more detailed advice next week but any general advice would be appreciated.

Yes it is possible, I suggest that you put your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see what you would receive.

Just another question. My cb esa in due to end in June as I will have been on it for 365 days and I'm in the wrag , Do they automatically switch me over to income based or will I have to make a new claim? My income will be low enough to qualify but I'm not sure about the procedure.

Thanks

They should check your eligibility for ESA(IR) about 8 weeks before your ESA(CB) ends. If you have not heard anything 6 weeks before it ends then contact the DWP. You will need to complete an ESA3 form about your household income, savings and assets and any hours that a partner works.
