Ending ESA claim was created by Henry01
Hi
I have just renewed my subscription tonight. Not been in the site for some time so apologies if this isn’t in the right place. I have been doing permitted work in ESA support group but have been offered a new job which is 18 hours a week. This will end my ESA. I am worried it will also affect my pip. Also how and when do I tell the DWP about my job. I’d rather not speak to them. Thanks

Hi Henry01

You need to inform ESA as soon as you start employment that you are working over 16 hrs per week.

It may affect your PIP claim, but it would depend on your circumstances as you can claim PIP and work, I have helped many claimants apply for PIP whilst working.

I would advise you to seek help from your local Welfare Rights Organisation; advicelocal.uk lawcentres.org

Hi thanks, I will advise them. Do I need to tell pip? I will need quite a lot of support in order to do this job. Also my condition is fluctuating so I have no idea at this stage if it’s something I can maintain but I feel I need to take the chance as I really don’t want to spend the rest of my life on benefits.

Thanks Gary
I did speak to my local citizens advice but to be honest they weren’t very helpful. I was advised to carry on claiming benefits and not to take the job. Yes I will be worse of financially but I don’t want to live on benefits the rest of my life. Do I have to inform pip about working? I have a fluctuating MH problem and will need a lot of help to work. I have no idea if I will be able to Maintain working at this stage.

Hi Henry 01, I'm not a Mod but sure you don't have to inform PIP of your work as it is not means tested. The only issue I believe could be that at renewal whenever that comes round, if you have managed to make a go of the job, they could query if you are as badly impaired by your MH as you say and yet been working. But if you were able to document receiving lots of support then that should be an obstacle that can be overcome.
May I say personally a] I admire your courage trying to do this job and b] isn't it sad that CAB would say a thing so discouraging to a client.
Best wishes,
Denby

Hi Henry01

I would just add to denby's post, if your condition has improved then you do need to inform the DWP otherwise you could be done for benefit fraud.

When you contact DWP to report a change in circumstances, this may result in your claim ceasing or trigger a new assessment.
