Eligibility for Severe Disability Premium.

Hi,

Due to long-term physical and mental health difficulties I am in receipt of ESA, and recently PIP.

The DWP have written to me offering me the Severe Disability Premium.

However, I have a feeling that I might not be eligible.

At the moment, I live with my parents. My father receives his state pension. My mother dosen't claim any benefits.

I am anxious to gain independence from my parents, but this has taken longer than expected, but will hopefully happen sometime this year. I am aware that I will need to migrate from ESA to UC in order to claim housing support.

Am I able to claim the Severe Disability Premium whilst I am still living with my parents or will I need to wait until I am living by myself?

If, as I suspect, I am unable to claim the SDP whilst I am living with my parents, will I be able to claim backdated SDP from the start of the PIP claim?

Thank you in advance.

Kind regards,

Steve.

Hi Steve

Sorry for the length of time it's taken to answer your post.

In order for you to receive SDP your parents would both need to be on a qualifying benefit - (DLA or PIP) which they are not.

When you live by yourself you won't be able to backdate the claim for SDP as you weren't eligible at the time.
