If a person decides to come off pip voluntarily, what are the consequences? Ie. Does it affect their savings if they have more than the 16,000? Does it make the dwp suspicious? Do they pay tax on their savings? I would think they cannot claim any benefits like council tax etc. Just how would it affect their lives? Is it even a good idea? Thank you.

Hi magpiejoe08

PIP is not a means-tested benefit, and therefore a claimant's savings are not taken into consideration.

If a person wishes to cancel their benefit, the DWP will just do so - they are unlikely to ask why.

If their savings exceed 16k this would have an impact on any means-tested benefits.

I can't tell you how else it would affect their lives or whether it is a good idea - a claimant can only decide that for themselves.

You could just not fill in the form next time they send it?
I knew someone who voluntarily came came off them, but she phoned them up and said she felt she was well now. Turned out she wasn't, and that believing she was was actually part of not being well! She felt guilty about being on benefits. She did need them though, however her illness meant she struggled to have insight into her illness...a total conundrum.
So, yes, you could just wait until the renewal, and then not return the form. Say you can't fill it out at the time, and will do so later, and then just don't do it. They probably won't chase you up.

Hi magpiejoe08

Most claimants who come off PIP is because their condition has improved. If your condition has improved then you have a duty to inform the DWP of a change in circumstances. Other claimants wait until PIP comes to an end then they do not renew their claim.

Any tax on savings is usually deducted at source.

As BIS has stated you will not be able to claim any means tested benefits if you have savings over £16k.
