UC, PIP and ESA together? was created by Casseopia
Hello,

I'm currently on UC and applying for PIP. A friend told me I should also apply for ESA. So tired and brain-fogged at the moment and finding it tricky to find an answer for this... please help an idiot out here. Could I be on all 3 at the same time? And does any one of them impact the other?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Casseopia

The short answer to your question is yes.

PIP will not have an effect on either ESA or UC.

ESA whether legacy or not will have an effect on UC, as UC is means tested.

New Style ESA is a fortnightly payment that can be claimed on its own or at the same time as Universal Credit (UC).

New Style ESA is a contributory benefit. Normally, this means you may be able to get it if you’ve paid or been credited with enough National Insurance contributions in the 2 full tax years before the year you’re claiming in.

Eligibility

To get New Style ESA you’ll need to have been an employee or self-employed and paid (or been credited with) National Insurance contributions, usually in the last 2 to 3 years.

You will also need to have a fit note (sometimes called ‘sick note’ or ‘doctor’s note’) but you can start making your claim before you have one. If you have only just become ill, you can self-certify for the first 7 days.

You can get New Style ESA on its own or at the same time as Universal Credit. If you apply for and are awarded both benefits, the New Style ESA you are paid will reduce your Universal Credit payment by the same amount.

Hi again Gary,

I spoke to my UC advisor yesterday who asked me to send a Fit Note because stopping my freelance, self-employed work is a new thing. I asked her if this was an ESA application or related to it in any way and she said no. She wasn't particularly clear about what help she was offering me but it did involve extra money.

I asked her about ESA and she said it would impact UC and that any ESA would be deducted from UC. So now I'm more confused than ever!

Hi Casseopia

The reason why your UC advisor has instructed you to send in a fit note to your workcoach is to start the assessment phase, this means that if your work capability assessment is successful then you will receive the LCWRA from the 14 week of you handing in your fit note. It can take many months before your claim comes into payment if your are successful, it should be backdated to the start of the 14 week.

On UC this is called LCWRA Element and is worth an extra £54.28 pm.

Any money your receive from a ESA claim will be deducted from your UC claim, remember UC is means tested and any income received will be deducted from UC, apart from PIP/DLA
