PIP telephone assessment audio recording

Hi,

I have a PIP assessment on Wednesday and I thought I read somewhere that I have to give at least 3 days notice if I intend to record it, so I phoned yesterday and told them that I intended to tape the interview. They were fine with this, noted it and said just make sure I inform the person doing the assessment at the beginning as well. The lady was also happy that it would save them from having to record it. Since then, I have noted that you always advise to get the assessment recorded from their end. Should I ask them to do it as well? I also have just read, on here, that when someone else asked for it to be recorded they changed the assessment from telephone to video! (Sounds like they did this just so they wouldn't have to arrange for it to be recorded?)
In conclusion, my question is "Should I ask IAS to record the telephone assessment, as well as doing so myself, and do I legally have to inform the assessor when they phone as well, since I have already given notice?"

Thank you, Janine.

Hi JM

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum

You can request for the assessment services to record it - and they may well tell you they don't have the services to do so. This comes down to the availability of recording facilities and available assessors. Not all assessor agree to be recording and they are not legally obliged to agree.

If you insist on a recording then they will probably tell you that you will have to wait. If they think they have sufficient evidence they might look into doing a paper-based assessment - but this is not given and it is unlikely to be done except on rare occasions as they won't want to open the floodgates of lots of claimants saying they want paper-based if they can't have a recording.

If you say that you are going to record the assessment yourself - the assessment may not take place because it would be too easy for claimants to tamper with the recordings. You will find if you try that this is something that is not open to discussion.

We suggest that people ask the assessment centre to make a recording and at the same time make covert recordings for their own record, this can be done in any method available to you.

Hi Gary,
Thank you for replying.
I will certainly read through the Forum info as soon as I can after my assessment is over.
I think I will have to leave things as they are now because it looks like it would probably be too late to get IAS to tape the conversation now and I have given notice which they said they would make the assessor aware of.
The lady at IAS also clearly stated (wrongly or rightly) that " should I need it then that (i.e. my recording) will be just as good evidence afterwards as if they had recorded it for me."
