If a married person on ESA long term had savings of say £10,000 how much would their benefits be reduced by each week ? I have tried to figure it out but I find it confusing.
Thank you.

OK. First of all it depends on the type of ESA the person is receiving! If it is an ESA(CB) only claim then their savings have no effect on their ESA and they do not need to inform the DWP.
If they are receiving ESA(IR) or ESA(CB) with an ESA(IR) top up then the following applies;
- Being married is not relevant, the allowance is the same for a single person vs a married one.
- The test takes into account all monies that the person has; saving accounts, current accounts, ISAs, assets such as shares and Premium Bonds, the cash in their wallet and pockets.
- Any amount over £6000 must be reported to the DWP immediately or they risk there being an over payment of their ESA.
- Any amount over £16,000 stops entitlement to payment
- Amounts over £6000 result in a £1/week deduction from the ESA(IR) for every £250 in excess of the £6000, so £10,000 would result in a £16/week deduction (£10,000 - £6000 = £4000 / £250 = £16).

TODAY I have received a letter from DWP saying they are ' reviewing my benefits' and that I just attend a meeting at their local job centre .
I have never had such a letter before. I am worried.
Do I HAVE to attend ? Is this unusual ?
Thanks

The most likely cause is that you have been picked at random for this pleasure but it's also possible that something has been flagged by HMRC to the DWP.
I am afraid you are required to attend or your ESA could be suspended, you can have someone with you and if travelling to the their offices would be a problem you can ask for the meeting to be held in your home.

Can this be true? Surely he would only have to type my National Insurance number into his computer?
He told me why he wants to see me and it was nothing to really worry over .
