Is it worth phoning the DWP and asking how they came to the decision when they have ignored his physical illness? and if I did this would it trigger an MR (as Im not too sure we are going to do this yet)?
You should have received the Decision Makers Statement of Reasons as part of the Decision Letter. You can try contacting them, it will require a call back, they may be unwilling to go beyond what is on the letter already.
You do need to be careful that the request does not result in an MR being carried out. The DWP seem to blow hot and cold on MRs doing them not requested and forgetting them when they are.
