ESA & voluntary work

ESA & voluntary work was created by Townhound
I've realised that I haven't declared my voluntary job and now worried its going to cause me trouble. I had a lot of hassle from DWP about still living with ex-partner and therefore needing a visit (which hasn't happened) so although my claim dated back to early February i only received payment last month. So between having DWP pushing me to move out, doing PIP claim, i didn't think to query when they didn't ask
. Is it the PW1 form i need to submit or do i just call them?

I've volunteered in this job for nearly a year as a way to push my comfort zones and help with a reference for when i am able to properly work. I was a client previously & offered to help out so it isn't for a charity. I do under 16hrs and they cover my expenses so i'm not out of pocket and like paid staff i can have some free treatments if i choose to.

I'm also concerned with both ESA & PIP it may appear that i am more able because of volunteering. I do have to do things i've said on PIP i find difficult like mixing socially and dealing with complex information (i have trouble concentrating/memory) but its fairly quiet & i have the option to avoid any tasks i don't feel upto and not sure my work level would be acceptable if paid.

The big problem with voluntary work is whether it is actually classed as voluntary, you mention paid employees which makes me wonder if the work you are doing is unpaid, this is not the same as it being voluntary.

You definitely need to get this sorted as the DWP may make their own assumptions if you leave it. Yes, you need to request a PW1 form.

Whilst your volunteering should not initiate a reassessment of your ESA claim, the fact that you are doing it will be taken into account the next time you are assessed and assumptions will be made as to your capabilities.

Thanks Gordon

I understand, so is it unpaid work rather than voluntary as a for profit company benefits. Unfortunately there wasn't any charity opportunities i could manage near home, but suspect the assumptions would still be made on capabilities.

I've not had an assessment yet which is what concerns me, so would i be better off giving the job up?
I don't really want to as its been beneficial to my recovery & added to my support network but equally its not representative of what i could manage doing a similar job elsewhere as few places have this set up nor could i support myself on hours i can manage.

We can't tell you what to do with the job. If your aim is to come off benefits then continuing with the work may be the way to go. Conversely if the work is helping to improve you conditions but coming of benefits is not realistic then maybe consider the risk to your claim.

Not that i wish to withhold information, but If i inform them now about the job won't they make still make those assumptions even if i give reasons for leaving as not coping etc?

Unfortunately as i'm trying to move & will lose the help/support i still get from ex in order to get out & about I expect my mental health conditions will decline as i try go it alone. Had hoped job would provide a little stability as its more of a day out for me, but think i'll have to try replace it with something more benefits friendly.

It is a requirement of your receiving your ESA that you inform the DWP if you have started working, which you have. I cannot tell you otherwise.
