Mental Health and PIP Mobility was created by davidedi
Hello,

I have a question about the PIP mobility component that I have someone can help me with. Like many people with anxiety issues I struggle at times with leaving the house and taking journeys to places like the shops, etc. I've recently transferred from DLA to PIP and like a lot of people with mental health issues I've lost the mobility component. I'm thinking about requesting a mandatory reconsideration and would appreciate people's advice. I applied for PIP after the Upper Tribunal's decision that people with mental health issues could be awarded the mobility component, but before the Government changed the law to discriminate against people with "psychological distress". Does it make any difference when I applied originally for PIP? I don't want to appeal but wonder if there is any benefit in asking for a mandatory reconsideration?

Thanks for all the support you provide on this site. After a long process I was awarded the enhanced component of daily living and I'm sure this wouldn't have been possible without the guidance provided by Benefits & Work. My first claim for DLA back in 2012 resulted in 0 points and now I'm on the top level of living component and I'm very grateful.

I was very nervous about attending my PIP assessment after hearing all the horror stories. But my assessor was very good and I believe he was compassionate and really tried to understand the struggles I experience. He was disabled himself so I don't know if that made any difference? It took 3.5 hours, so it was very thorough

Thanks,
daved.

The DWP could have specified a date after which claims being started would be affected but they didn't so the only applicable date is the Decision Date, so if your Decision was made after 16 March then I would expect it to have been made using the new rules. I believe that a Tribunal will take the same position.

You are mistaken that claimants with mental health issues cannot receive a Mobility award, Descriptor (e) is still available and if you have walking difficulties as well then points from both Mobility activities could still result in an Enhanced award.
