I am in the ESA WRAG and also I am claiming PIP. I currently live with my parents but now wish to move to private rented accommodation. I am in a UC area and I understand that I now have to make a new claim for universal credit which will replace my current ESA claim.
My question - will this be an automatic 'read across' or will I have to go through all of the medicals and assessments that I went though with my ESA claim all over again?

It should be an automatic transfer, the UC Regulations recognise an existing award of ESA, but this is not always the case due to the poor training of DWP staff, if you have any problems then I would recommend that you get immediate face to face advice from a trained advisor.

Also be aware, once you are on UC there is no way back to what are now called legacy benefits, also as this is what is called a "natural migration" you are not entitled to any Transitional Protection.

Thank you for the reply. If I want to leave home then I have no other option. I just don't want to screw up my hard won esa result.

Hello Ikcdab,
I moved to Bath 18 moths ago which is also an area trailing UC. I too tranfered my ESA and upon the advice of the adviser continued to claim ESA and everything was transferred from ESA to UC. This all worked fine for a few months ( They simply took the ESA from my UC which included my rent money and paid me the difference, so two payments a month a different times which makes managing the money a bit easier.
However in April I was invited to yet another health assessment, this time under UC. When asked they said new benefit new rules. However at the assessment the advisor pulled out my previous ESA and asked me questions about gynaclamastia ( lump in the breast ) which thankfully cleared by tablets, but this was about five years ago. So if you have to go for a new health assessment they will revisit your ESA claim whilst claiming the two benefits are different.
Be warned even though I scored enough points to make me unavailable for work, they have decided that I am available for work related activity. Stuff like going for job interviews, attending training events. I has to go to the job centre to find out what this meant and the bloke there turned bright red when I said " If they have decided I cannot walk and I cannot sit and am likely to fill my pants at any time I'm really looking forward to a job interview " He said they would never ask me in as it would be a complete waste of their and my time. It has now been three months and no word from the Job Centre, but what they are able to do is reduce my benefit by £ 189.49. I am waiting for my Court date to try to sort this out.
I have left this post as I hope it might help you, but sadly they are being so secretive about this new benefit there seems nowhere to turn to for advice. The CAB dont know and the people here do not cover UC with their helpful guides - yet

Good luck

Actually we do cover claiming "ESA" under Universal Credit in out claim guides, what we do not provide support for is UC as a benefit as we do not currently support benefits such as Income Support, Housing Benefit, Tax Credits, etc.
