free dentist appointments with ESA was created by Evelyn
Help please:
I was penalised by the NHS dental services for having dental appointments for cleaning and checking last year even thought the dentist checked mny DWP letter and confirmed that I am ok.. The NHS Dentaldepartment has checked with DWP regarding my eligibility and DWP was not sure whether I am on ESA based on my national insurance contribution or Income-related ESA. Only one of them entiltes the person to have free dental check ups.And the DWP themselves are not sure.Looking at my allowance letters, it is rather ambigious. I was asked to contact DWP which immediately cause me anxiety..
How do I know what ESA I am having?
Thanks,
Eileen

You will need a copy of the last ESA Entitlement letter that you received, it will either have been sent around February of this year or quite recently as it has reissued.

What you need to look for are whether you are receiving any Premiums. From your previous posts I believe that you are in the Support Group so if you are receiving the Enhanced Disability Premium which is referred to as the Disability Income Guarantee on the letter then you are receiving ESA(IR).

If there are no other entries other than the Personal Allowance and the SG component then I would expect you to only be receiving ESA(CB). I'm assuming you were not transferred from another benefit.

You can also check the amount you receive, for ESA(CB) it will be £109.65, for ESA(IR) it will be £125.55 at least.

Thank you Gordon for your reply. I am sorry I missed you today in this forum. For the next couple of weeks, I have only limited access to the internet.
I looked for the wordings in your reply but I definitely cannot see words like ‘Premium’ etc.
I am still on indefinite DLA with Lower rate care and higher rate mobility, both indefintely.
I am in the support group in ESA . The letter says:
(Your living expenses £73.10
Limited capability for work addition
Extra money because you are in the support group £36.55
Which gives a total income-related amount £109.65
Income and Benefits
No income will be taken off your ESA
Your income-related amount is £109.65 less £0.00 so
you would have been entitled to £109.65
However because you are entitled to
contribution-based ESA we will pay you £109.65]
However, the wording before the above paragraph says ‘The payment of ESA is based on your National Insurance Contribution records and any additional amount the law says you need to live on.’
As I said in my last entry here, the NHS Dental dept said they have called DWP to check and DWP was also not sure what type ESA I was on. But from what you said based on the amount I receive, then I am in the contribution based ESA which means I was not entitled to free dental check up then.

Your letter confirms that you are only receiving ESA(CB), however, you should check whether you are eligible for an ESA(IR) top-up to this. ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

If you are not entitled to IR ESA, it might be worth checking to see if you qualify for help with prescriptions and dental care on the grounds of low income.

Dear Gordon and Mrs Hurtyback,
Sorry for non responding to your replies. Believe it or not, I was not able to access this website due to a Block by the country I was in!
I did not know until someone from a neighbouring country googled B&W and was able to access the website online.
I am back now so able to see your replies.
I will sort out this ESA dental issue.
Many thanks to both of you.
