MariW: Attendance Allowance Queries

I have recently helped a lady of eighty-plus complete an application for Attendance Allowance. Her care needs results from a very aggressive (though non-terminal cancer) and a host of pre-existent limitations.

My own hunch is that the claim is borderline. A contact with considerably more knowledge of AA believes that the claimant will receive an award. However, several pieces of what I considered key information were left out at the insistence of this very independent OAP.

It is some time since the claim was submitted. I would like to check that all the paperwork has been received by the DWP. I found an email address online but it is obviously obsolete because it “bounced”. Is there a current email address to which I can write?

Thank you,

Mari

You won't be able to communicate with the DWP by email, it is not considered to be a secure system.

I'm afraid it's phone or letter.

Last year I helped an elderly lady with her claim for Attendance Allowance. Her application was posted at the end of September and a decision made 5-6 weeks later. She was awarded the higher rate for a 12-month period. I did not think the claimant would get the higher rate but I did expect a longer term award considering her limitations and prognoses.

Six months following the decision and first payment she has been sent a renewal pack. Is this the norm for AA? I’m trying to help her through this but my own disabling condition is getting worse. I may have to seek out welfare support for her if this is how it is going to be.

I’d be surprised if my neighbour did not qualify for another award. Do the DWP write to say whether there will be a subsequent award before the end of the original award?

Thank you,

Mari

I would expect the DWP to contact the claimant about 13 weeks before the end of the award to see whether it can be renewed. This is a full reassessment of the claim, it needs to be treated as a new claim.

Any new award will usually start from the day after the current award ends providing the claimant returns the claim forms before the award ends.

Thanks, Gordon!

I have helped the claimant complete the form as though it were an initial claim but have made back references to the claim of last year.

Is AA an annual award or can it be granted for longer periods even when the claimant is not terminally ill? I cannot do anymore.

No it follows the normal rules, so awards can be for a fixed length, this can be for a year or longer or it can be an indefinite award.
