Transfer to Universal Credit

Transfer to Universal Credit was created by Sasha
I've just been informed that the area where I live is about to be switched to Universal Credit. I am claiming Contributions Based ESA. I get no Income Related top up at all (due to savings I have)and as I live with my parents, I claim no other means tested benefits. However, as my savings are under £16 000, I do have an underlying entitlement to reduced Income Related ESA and every year, the DWP puts me through a means test assessment, presumably to check whether I still have this underlying entitlement to IR ESA. Does anybody know if I will be moved onto Universal Credit?

Thanks.

Our understanding is that ESA claimants will begin being moved to UC (ESA(IR)) and New ESA ESA(CB)) at some time in 2019, although based on the progress of UC to date would suggest that this is optimistic

Will Universal Credit be means tested for those of us currently on Contributions Based ESA, once we are eventually transferred to UC? I'm afraid I know virtually nothing about UC....

I'm not sure that I understand your question :(

UC is a means tested benefit and all of the major benefits that it replaces are also means tested.

I'm sorry. I misread your first reply which is why my second question didn't make sense. So long as I remain in the support group, I should be transferred to this "New ESA" then and not Universal Credit. Has the DWP released any details about this? Will it be very different from the current Contributions Based ESA?

Being in the Support Group is not relevant to a claimant being transferred.

New ESA is to all intents and purposes the same as ESA(CB), the relevant legislation is different but the criteria are exactly the same.

There is no additional information in the public domain at this time about how and when ESA claimants will be migrated other than the vague date of the process starting in 2019. We will keep members informed as more info becomes available but I would not expect anything to become clearer before 2019.
