Hi Happy New year to you all.
What a Christmas we have had. Thursday before Christmas my husband scan on his chest sorry forgot what its called. This we had a mighty shock and sent to hospital with out any delay pack for London he said.. Only to get 1 a bigger shock and 2 it made a lot of pennies drop in to place. He a large size Myxoma in his left ventricle with enlarged heart. Mess appeared to be attached to the septum it was also it partially obstructing his Mitral valve. so this menu he had to stay in hospital and yes I also had to stay with him because he had got quite distressed about it all. Ok I stayed in hospital accommodation it's is quite expensive but I got no choice. I'm his 24 hour carer .
I was wondering if there is anyway I can get help in paying for the accommodation as it running up a good size bill. And that's not food, not that I'm very hungry, I living on soup ,yogurt, and bananas. Does anybody have any experience in hospital and stays or any advice.

We are in London St Thomas Hospital

Jacqui

I'm so sorry to hear of your difficultie.

I'm afraid there is nothing that I can think of which will help with your extra costs at this time. However, there should be an advisor at St. Thomas's that may be able to provide more help, one of the nurses or an administrator should be able to put you in touch with them.

At the risk of making matters worse, if your husband receives DLA or PIP then you need to notify the DWP if there is any likelihood that he will be in hospital for more than 28 days.

Thank you Garden that was the next question he has to be in for longer than 28 days.
If he is not in for that amount of time do I have to let them know he has even had the operation or not. Not even sure if I have to let them this has happened.

I can't tell you that you don't have to contact them, being a hospital in-patient is one of the changes that should be notified, however, it will only impact on his benefits if he is in hospital for more than 28 days, as a single period of a combination of periods separated by less than 28 days, the day he was admitted and the day he is discharged do not count.

Jacqui sorry to hear yours and your husbands difficulties the only thing I was thinking that maybe be able to help or advice you is The Patient Advice and Liaison Office - PALS Office is usually in every hospital, I think they should be near the main entrance. On the hospital website it is showing a telephone number for them as - 020 7188 8801 open 9am to 5pm and email address as This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. It maybe worth discussing re the accommodation costs and if they have any alternative to your situation or reduced costs., They can usually advice or find out of any services that maybe available to you and your husband situation and give you further information. They will also know if they have a Carer Liaison Officer based at the hospital or who visits throughout the weeks which if they do will be helpful, if not it may also be worth looking for help from the local Carer Centre near the area as they may also be able to advice you.

Hope the information helps in some small way all the very best of wishes to you and your husband.

Meg

Normally the hospital accommodation they provide is very cheap for relatives and you will get a card that lets you purchase meals at a reduce rate in the hospital canteen at the same rate the nurses pay. PALS or the equivalent or the hospital purser will assist you and if an interpreter is needed they will provide one too, more so to help with both of you if needed.
My mother had to stay at Guys and St Thomas for my father with his heart problems and as they live in Devon accommodation was therefore provided. Help was given via PALS at both hospitals and costs were kept to the very minimum with their help.Good luck and I trust all goes well.
