PIP denied - should I ask for an explanation

Dear moderators,

Having been a DLA claimant for some years, I have now undergone an assessment for PIP and have been informed that my application has been turned down. The decision letter lists the scores given under the various descriptors and then there is a little over a page of explanation under the heading "My decision". I'm very unhappy with the scores and the explanation given by the decision maker!

The back of the letter lists three things I can now do: "You can ask us to explain why"/"You can ask us to reconsider a decision"/"When you've done this you can appeal". The Benefits and Work website has very helpful advice on the second and third of these but none on the first, so I want to ask whether there is any advantage in asking for an explanation of the decision before asking for a mandatory reconsideration. Am I likely to receive any further explanatory details beyond that already given in the decision letter? And can I ask for a copy of the report by the IAS assessor at this stage?

It's unlikely that the DM will provide more information about their Decision, it's really an opportunity for you to highlight any serious errors that you feel that there are with the Decision.

Yew, you can request a copy of the assessment report by contacting the DWP office dealing with your claim.
