Carers Allowance affect on ESA was created by rj
Hi,
I was migrated from Incapacity benefit to ESA Support group in 2012, with my benefit remaining at Incapacity rates. I’m also on enhanced PIP (both components). Will the Carers Allowance claimed by my Carer reduce my ESA payments. Many thanks.

Based on your post the CA will have no effect on your ESA, it would only be a potential issue if you were receiving the Severe Disability Premium but your post suggests that you are only receiving ESA(CB) possibly with a Transitional Payment to make it up to the same as your IB was.

Hi Gordon, thank you for your reply yesterday regarding my carer’s claim for CA. I perhaps should have mentioned that it is my wife that is claiming CA. Today, my wife spoke to the ESA department on my behalf. The person my wife spoke with was initially a bit unsure regarding those of us that migrated from IB to ESA Support group, so she had to seek advice, but eventually told my wife that because my ESA has included an adult dependency element for her, the fact that she has been awarded CA means that this part of my ESA will now stop being paid to me. In effect, we will end up only about £5 a week better off overall (plus my wife will get NI credits). The advisor told my wife that the removal of the adult dependency element that’s happening now, would also have happened under IB rules, if my wife had claimed CA back then, so it’s okay for them to do it now. It sounds logical, but I have never seen that written anywhere. Are they correct? Does this ruling really apply to those of us that were transferred from IB to ESA Support group? For obvious reasons I just don’t trust them. Many thanks Gordon for your time and advice.

Benga;

It appears to be correct, from what I can see the Adult Dependancy payment is an overlapping benefit with CA, this means that only the higher of the two can be paid, this appears to be the CA in your case.

Thank you Gordon. At least we are £5 better off with my wife claiming CA until she reaches pension age, plus her extra NI credits will increase her state pension slightly when she gets it. I’m due to get my state pension late next year, so at least I won’t have the hassle of ESA from then on. As far as I know, my ESA will stop at that point.
I couldn’t find the first of the references you gave, it didn’t appear to be there, but I did look at the second, not that I could make much sense of it.
Thank you again Gordon, getting at the truth without B&W’s help, would be nigh on impossible.

Sorry I transposed the last two digits it should have read 16135.

Yes, your ESA will stop when you reach State Retirement Age.

Although your wife's CA will stop when she reaches SRA she will retain an underlying entitlement as long as she continues to provide the 35 hours of care a week and you have an enabling benefit. If you are entitled to Pension Credit then it would enable the Carers Addition to be added.
