Should benefit be back-dated? was created by josiemcg
On 30th April my contribution-based WRAG group ESA was stopped as I had been receiving it for over a year. However the re-assessment the DWP initiated in November 2011 was still ongoing, the medical took place in May, and I was recently notified that I had been placed in the Support Group. (With many thanks to your helpful guides and website). However the letter tells me the new support group amount will only apply from 1st May until 30th November and the DWP employee I contacted by phone was unable to explain why these dates had been selected, despite having my file in front of her (it beggars belief!) Can anyone please tell me if the new benefit amount is normally back-dated to the start of a re-assessment? Should I assume that November is the date for the next re-assessment? Thanks.

The letter sounds like the standard award letter, I don't know what it is about the DWP computer system that results in their letters referring to a date in November, perhape its when the Christmas bonus is processed, but they all say this.

It is most certainly not, except by coincidence, when you will be next reviewed. This date is based on the prognosis from your medical report. You can find this out by request your the ESA85 if you had a medical, or the ESA85A if you did not, from your local DWP office.

ESA awards usually apply from the date of the Decision unless there is a clear reason for it to be backdated, so I would not expect you to receive back payments from 30/04 to when you were placed in the Support Group.

PS. Congratulations on the result.

Thanks Gordon - you've answered all my queries. I can't emphasize enough how much this website has helped and encouraged me to keep plodding on through the ESA process. Thank you all for your hard work.
